Important Information for Women Using Weight Loss Injections
At Bellbrooke Surgery, we are committed to keeping our patients informed about any medication that may affect their health and wellbeing. We would like to share important advice for women who are using GLP-1 agonist injections such as tirzepatide (Mounjaro) or semaglutide (Ozempic) for weight management, especially when taken alongside contraceptive pills or hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
Contraceptive Effectiveness and Tirzepatide
If you are taking tirzepatide (Mounjaro) and also using the contraceptive pill, please be aware that tirzepatide may reduce the effectiveness of your contraception. To help prevent unwanted pregnancy:
- Use condoms for four weeks after each dose change of tirzepatide.
- This advice does not apply to patients using semaglutide (Ozempic).
We recommend that you use a barrier method of contraception AND DO NOT GET PREGNANT, as there is no safety data in early pregnancy.
If you have any concerns or would like to discuss your contraceptive options, please contact the practice.
HRT and Weight Loss Injections
Women taking GLP-1 agonist injections and also using oral progestogens—either alone or as part of combined oral HRT—should also be aware that these medications may reduce the effectiveness of HRT in protecting the endometrium (womb lining).
We encourage you to book a review with the practice so we can discuss your treatment and explore the best options to ensure your continued protection and wellbeing.
If you are affected by any of the above or would like more information, please don’t hesitate to contact the practice. Your safety and health are our priority.
